how hard is it to put a cam into an engine while it is still in the car? Is it possible to do this with never doing one before?

it can be done, and lot of peopel have done it. having the engine in the car wouldn't be my first choice, but if that's all i was doing i'd do it with the engien in.

expect to work on it for a couple days.
You have to take off the carb, distributer"Make sure that roter points to no.1 driver side front" ,mainifold, valve covers, ac pump " you will have to drain the ac gas if you have ac", alternater, water pump, power stereing, smog pump, radiator, condenser, harmonic damper, timeing chain cover&gear, fuel pump "if not electric",and pull the hood latch assembly loose and tempararally bend it so the cam will slide out. its a pain in the butt and theres alot of wires that need to be disconected it took be a good 8 hours to change a cam in my 3rd gen fbod "including cleaning manifold ect".
Only took me 3 hours to change a cam in my 76 Pu "no ac or other crap". If you not an acomplished Mechanic, Count on 12 hours+ for the cam change.
