whats the deal?
ok i have a rebuilt 305 tpi with bout 30k on it, and it is idling like ****, no codes pop up or anything, but black smoke occasionally, ok, heres the major deal, i raced a 16 second truck and lost, so mine has to be running around 16's which is just not normal, engine runs good othere than it idles and takes of so doggy, could this just need a tune up, or could it be engine failure? lol, it really hurts to get taken by a 16 second vehicle when my car should be 15's, thanks
btw i did run with a bad maf sensor for approx 3-5k, so it ran rich for a LONG time, so maybe i have fouled plugs, but im no mechanic, i just didnt know if i should give it a tune up since the mileage on it is so low,

Well, actually, it isn't that unusual. Low 16's for a stock 305TPI with 2.77 gears and street tires is common.
Regardless, you apparently have an idle problem. Check the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, air and EVAP filters, PCV, and oxygen sensor. Inspect the vacuum hoses. Since your car has 30,000 miles on it, you should be changing the transmission and rear axle oil for the second time, as well. Based on mileage, you should be on yout ninth or tenth oil and filter change, but based on age you should have at least 16 oil changes behind you. (My '96 SS has 4,100 miles and has had seven Mobil 1 15W50 oil changes, and is due.)
The cooling system service and EGR services are also due, so don't overlook those.
When all that is done, if you still have idle issues, you'll at least be able to discount the scheduled service items.

just had the tranny rebuilt up last summer, i have 3.23 gears posi, so i was thinkin i should do a little better than 16's, i was hoping, i think its just cause of the idle, cause i have a doggy start, i have flowmaster exhaust 80 series on it, its weird, some days it'll idle like perfect, but others it runs not soo good, it seems like when its cold outside it runs great, but when it gets hot like it is now, it dont run good at all, thanks a lot for that info tho, i never thought bout checkin vacum lines and all that, thanks
, and its starting to blow blue smoke on start up and a tiny bit on idle, could that b valve seals? seeds? or piston rings
