dancing voltage guage on 85 Z28

I have a new battery and a new alternator. They went out separetely. The battery was 6 yrs old, the alternator was 3yrs old. Not too bad. But even before they individually went out my dashboard voltage guage has a tendancy to "dance" around and even at a constant highway speed (70 MPH @ ~2150 RPM). It acts like it has a bad ground when it dances and occationally scares me after it has been acting normal for a while.

I've checked the voltage at the battery terminals and it is a good 13.5+V even when the dash guagwe shows 12~13V. So I know the guage isn't accurately displaying the real voltage.

Its more annoying than anything else because I cannot relly on the readings. I haven't touched any wiring.

Any suggestions/thoughts?

I'm getting an 86 IROC guage cluster so I'll see if my guages or wiring are somehow tweaked when I install it.

James

i've had some bad luck with rebuilt alternators, it may be your alternator and not the rest of your car causing the gauge to move around. other than that i'd clean and check the connections.

Damn Fuseable Links .... TRUST ME! Even when my car was still it used to bounce even up to 17volts which evenutually cooked my ignition coil, alternator and made my battery leak pretty good. Don't run the car anymore and replace the + wire from your battery to your starter (and those F@#*##& fuseable links!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Hope this helps

I replaced the cluster w/ a 145 MPH speedo one donated from an 86 IROC on ebay and now everything works. I guess my guage took a sh*t.
