what are the best stock heads for 305?

I was wondering how the stock 305 heads compared. I have a like new set of heads off a 84 L69 and was wondering if any of the other castings were better. Are the heads on my 86 tpi 305 any different? Just currious.

Your 416 heads are about the best 305 heads going. But the 081 center-bolt VC are about the same.

Yes I agree that the 081 castings are the best. TPI/87 L69 heads.

so 416 is the casting # for the 84 l69 motor? I guess I have the best of the worst then! lol just kidding. Somehow I wind up with a lot of 305 parts, i wish I could find free or cheap 350 parts instead.

113, what engine where they on? the best heads would flow the most, big valves and smaller unshrouded combustion chambers. I thought the L69 heads were the probably best but have not seen all the other ones available to know for sure.

the 84 L69 has 416 heads. Port them up and add some 1.94" and 1.6" valves and you will be set.

I might have considered bigger valves if they didnt already have a new 3 way cut valve seat. I stumbled across these heads with new valves and valve guides for 50$, for that price I was not sure about them but the machine shop I took them to told me they were like the best gm 305 heads. I spent $150 extra for the valve job, springs and to have them milled a little. Hearing the same second opinion from you makes me feel better.

416s and 081s are the exact same head, except the latter has centre bolt valve covers.

601s also came on L69s and are perhaps a tad better better flow-wise.

All of them port and polish up excellently. Add 1.94" intake valves and you have a very good set of street performance heads for a 305 or a 350.

Follow the link at the endx of my sig.

Vortec 305s. Same thing as the L31 vortecs except with a smaller chamber (58cc) and smaller intake valve. Port design and chamber shape are the same as the 350 version.

After that my vote would go for 601's closely followed by 416s.

My 601s flow 220cfm on the intake(@ 28 in/h20 and .425" lift and 175 on the exhaust(@28 in/h20 and .445" lift). That is a near stock head, just undercut swirl polished stainless valves, gasket match, and a little bowl work.

"350 heads" are no guarantee of anything decent. In fact most of them are garbage too.

The heads on a LB9 are the aforementioned 416s in 85 and 86, and 081s from 87-up.

You're right, but they are free and right now I just need my car back on the road.
