I removed the thing that encompasses the carb, it looks sorta like a smaller filter element and it sits right on the edge where the bowl drops. It's filled with charcoal or somethin', supposed to prevent flare-out upon backfiring. I read a TBI article about removing this thing cause it sits up high enough to prevent some of the incoming fresh air from going straight into the carb, look at it eye-level, you'll see it only leaves less than an inch from the top of the airbowl. PITA, it's really siliconed onto there.
I pulled what remained of the ThermAC, someone got to the doors before me, & I took out the vacuum motors. I figured why bother with them? The vac switch leaked anyway.
The air deflector (I think) only exists in the smaller single inlet airbowls, sits right in front of the inlet to the bowl and only GOD knows why. I tore that out of my original one before I got the dual snorkel. Along with the aforementioned stuff. I figure the only thing I want in front of the airflow is the K&N and only that. Basically free mods, although results will probably vary. With my "turbo-bluge" air inlet I was able to transfer the original airbowl lid and that gave me three air inlets. The airbox for that particular application was what I took the door out of. I don't know whether this helped or hindered, but the dumb thing never worked anyway and I didn't want to pay $100+ for a used solenoid & switch to fix the stupid thing.
