Possible vacuum leak?

Just getting some opinions before I pull vacuum lines and start reeeeaally looking for a leak..

My climate control (or whatever it's called) takes around 30 seconds to switch paths. If that made no sense... When I first turn it on it takes about 30 seconds for the air to stop blowing out the defrost vents and start blowing out the .. umm.. "vent" vents. heh

(On that note, has anybody actually seen the thing inside the climate controls that switches vents? It's this tiny quarter-sized thing with one vacuum line coming in and 5? or so lines going out and a rubber seal that looks like a maze. I thought it was the neatest thing I've seen in my car in a while. hehe)

Yeah I've seen it. It's a POS system.

There are little "doors" that direct airflow (at least in my 84s). In my cars they are always frozen up, perhaps in your car they are just "sticking"?

Mine was doing the same thing. I took that cool switch out, and cleaned up the connections, and then made sure under-hood hookups were good. There is one line that comes out of the passenger side firewall that goes to the plenum, and another that goes to the heater switch. There are also a couple vacuum motors above the passenger floorboards. Put your ear in real close to that stuff (inside the car) and you will hear any leaks.

Mine is working good now.

This vacuum switch needs to be clean at all its edges and requires a layer of heavy silicone grease to seal the labyrinth (maze) of passages you noticed. I've used dielectric silicone grease to replace the original grease, and have had good success. Since you've already looked into it, you'll understand what the system is like.

You also need a good vacuum source from the intake.
