Flywheel questions.
Flywheel questions.
Allright, I have my Motor up and out of the Car, and one of the reasons was to replace the Flywheel, Several of the Teeth are Damaged.
I have another Flywheel Off a old 350 Block, And I assumed it would Fit, But It does not. It is to large.
I thought three were only Two Differnt flywheels, pre 86 and 86-presewnt, Once peice reare main Vrs the Earlier Two peice Design.
These are Both pre 86 Two peice locks, why are the flywheels Differnt ?
With that In Mind, Where could I find a Good quality, moderately priced Flywheel for an 85 LG4, Two peice rear main block.
Secondly, Upon Removal Of the motor I noted that one of the bellhousing bolts was broke, rather the entire Flange on the bellhousing side was cracked off.
it is the one directly above the starter. Its possible I guess that this is why the starter wouldnt engage prperly and stripped the flywheel in the first place, Isnt it ?
Am I going to have trouble Putting it all back together without this bolt/flange, It seems like it will be fine to me, its a 700R4.

There are 2 55-86 flywheel / flex plate sizes. They measure about 12¾" diameter and 14" diameter, with 153 and 168 teeth on the ring gear respectively. In manual trans cars, there are 2 clutch sizes as well, 10.4" and 11", that fit those flywheels.
You just need the other size of flex plate. Alot of Powerglide cars used it too, while the 400 and then later the 350 cars used the larger one.
You should have no problem finding the right flex plate, with those numbers to go by. They're not uncommon or anything.
As far as the broken-off piece of the block, as long as you still have both starter bolt holes intact, it won't matter. Just make sure all 5 other bell housing bolts are present and tightened securely.

Bort,
RB covered the flywheels sizes expertly. (What else would you expect?)
As for the bellhousing, is the dowel area still intact, or is it broken off with the bolt flange?
If the dowel remained in place, the missing bolt would probably not be a significant problem. If both the dowel and bolt are missing, I would consider a different transmision or repair of the existing housing.
If you have access to a TIG welder it would be a simple matter to repair the housing. If not, you might be able to find a welding shop that offers boat propeller repair - they are generally very good at aluminum repair and refilling, and can get very good strength in their work (out of necessity).
Just a thought.
