Special Production AUSTRALIAN Rear??? Mechanic Bullsh*t or not?

Damn I havent been on this board in about a year. The kid who I sold my 86 TA to went to have 3.73's installed the other day by a performance shop that i kinda dont trust. He told the kid that he couldnt replace the gears becuase it was a special 1 of 100 Limited Australian Made rears and that they don't accept aftermarket gears? Ok now the entire time I owned the car and i used this forum I have never heard anything like that. Im doin some research so the kid doesnt get ripped off. The guy is tryin to sell him a 9" rear, which is jsut idiotic, a 305 does not need a 9", just extra weight. So is this bull**** or is it legit? im just lookin out for the kid so mommy doesnt have to spend more of her $$$ on his car.
Kyle

Australian Borg-Warner rears have only a limited number of relatively expensive gear sets available. They're much more common than 1 of 100.

Yes they are more common than you think. These rear are the 9 BOLT, instead if 10 bolts. These are special in the only respect that hardly anyone makes aftermarket gears for them. Because of this, its like $400 for it.

He can swap in any 10 bolt rear from another f-body (dime a dozen) and have the 3.73's installed in it for a lot cheaper than a 9"

When I was looking for a posi unit for my 1985 camaro. I had seen alot of those 9 bolt australian rearends. Most seemed to have a posi and disc brakes but ****ty gears. Tell him to get a peg leg(single trac),buy gears and a mini spool. Not what I did, although I wouldn't hesitate If I had to do it again. The reason is because these 7 5/8th posi units really suck unless you spend some big bucks.
