over heat?

i am not sure if my temp gauge is working properly. i have noticed iget warm in the cabin with windows down cruising. and my engin compartment is rather hot. my car sat yesterday for two hours after i drained the oil, and the valve covers were almost too hot to touch. but my temp guage is reading between 170 and 200. varies because of virginias wack weather.
should i replace the sending unit? I am just concerned that i am running real hot an not even know about it.

I think I have the same problem. I don't have a temp gauge so I can't tell. But I do notice that my rad fan is NEVER running.

You're looking for a non problem.
Put a thermometer in a pot of water.
Heat until between 170~ 200. Try to touch it. (Keep cold water ready).
Also, the coolant temp is generally lower than the rest of the engine.

yeah i understand that 170-200* is hot, but i used to be able to rest my hand on the vlave cover while leaning over the engine bay, a few hours after it has been shut down.
i dont have a fan problem, as i have a hayes adjustable switch hooked up to come on around 160-170.

you engine, or valve covers would be hot in the summer weather and running the engine will only add to the heat. i don't think you have a problem, but if you want to feel better take a few readings with a temp gun or change your sender.
