Crossfire injection/ cylinder numbers???

hey guys,

I am new to this board, so I dont know anyone yet,.. dont fry me please

this may be a stupid question, but i just replaced my wires/plugs/rotor/cap and now the engine turns but will not start. I have a 1982 CFI 305 V-8 setup.

I sprayed in some stuff to help it start, into the injectors, and it worked, (shot out flames,..) but as long as I held the gas down, it ran like a top, but when I let off, it shut off. The engine just rotates,.. but wont startup. someone told me i may have accidently messed up my plug order, so i need to redo them. I have the firing order for my car from PEPBOYS, but I am not sure how the engine cylinders are numbered,... isnt it front to back, alternating left to right??

Rear of engine

7 8
5 6
3 4
1 2

Front of engine

any help is appreciated,...

Thanks abunch!

Thomas

#1 is the front left plug, #2 is the front right, odd #s on the engines left. Im not sure if thats what your picture shows. Will the car idle? or it just wont start? I don't know why starting fluid would help it start if it wont idle, maybe you have a vacuum leak and the fuel delivery on startup is another problem. Just get the wires right before you worry, though :P

#1 is at the front left. Driver's side, front of the car. Like the first answer said, odd #s on the driver's side, even #s on the pass side.

The reason it shot flames out is because some cylinder got a spark when its intake valve was open, so all the fuel in the intake tract got lit.

Just FYI, a car or trucks right and left side are designated while sitting in the vehicle.

RB is right...(or left??)

engineboy:

left is right, and right is wrong.

Aren't words fun? I was a physics major in college. We used to say that "fizyx yz phun". That of course is closely related to the immortal question, "why isn't 'phonics' spelled the way it sounds?"

well,

in that case, I looked at the engine front outside the car, and thought it was my left, so right now the firing order is ALL TO HELL.

I'll fix that, and we'll see if it starts then.

no, it wont idle, it wont turn over at all, thats why I bothered trying the firing order, it started fine when i put in the starting fluid, which i thought was odd, and it ran as long as I kept my foot on the gas.

I'll try the firing order again now, and we'll see what happens,..

what a helpful board, Thanks Alot!
