I know the smog canister is on the drivers side in the corner by the headlights, but sitting right next to it is a strange blck plunger looking thing. It has a steel wire that is connected to the throttle assembly on the carb, can anyone tell me what it is. and what it does??? And can it be taken out?

 

are you talking about the cuse control unit?, mine was in that location, dose it have 2 speedo cables and a bunch of wires hanging out of it?

 

is it the small cylindrical thing located in the very bottom right corner of this picture? If so, yes its part of the cruise control system.

Incidentally, the circled part is also part of the cruise control system.

The "thing" in the lower right corner of your photo is the cruise control servo.
