how do belts go?
i only have 2 belts, one that goes from crank, water pump, then alternator? and the other goes crank to power steering or water pump to power steering? it rubs the water pump pully a little if i put it on the crank so what do you think? thanks

I can't remember if '85 had the flat multi-groove alternator belt like '86-'87 or not. Shouldn't matter, though.
I assume you don't have AC or A.I.R. The power steering belt only goes from crank to PS, not around the water pump.
Sounds like you have an alignment or pulley mis-match of one sort or another.

Perhaps. Can you see any shiny metal between the balancer & cover in front of the front seal?
