I thought I'd clear up the computer controlled distributor delemma
I junked the q-jet last year. Since then I have been wondering if I was getting any timing. I finally put a timing light on it and "yes" I am getting timing. Funny thing is initial is only 2 degrees and about 26 total (timing tab doesn't go very high). I bumped it up to 6 initial no pings no nothing on 87 octane, tons more throttle response and a little more power. I'm going to go up to 10 initial and see what happens.

sure your getting timing, The car wont run without "timing"
but are you getting load dependant advance ?
I didnt think So.

You never did answer my question as to exactly what your distributor looks like.
Load-dependant or not, 26 degrees is about 10 short of what a typical SBC likes at about 3000 rpms and WOT. And, it is way short of what it can use at partial throttle to improve gas mileage.

The reason it's only getting about 26 degrees total is because the intial is only 2. I put it at 6 so now it's about 30. I'm going to put it at 12 so then it will be 36.
I'm not sure if it's getting your "load dependant" advance but throttle response is excellent and I'm getting 17 mpg with a rich running holley DP and 3.73 gears, and when it comes down to it that's the purpose of part throttle advance.

How are you determining that you have 26' total. The timing tab only goes to 16', and you don't sound like you're usinga dial back timing light.
The module itself will advance the timing in the absence of the EST signal but only about 10-15' (i suppose it could be a little more even, but i doubt it's a full 24' as you say) past 1500 rpms or so, which is what you are seeing. But still, running a computer controlled distributor without a computer is absolutely retarded. Whether it functions or not is a moot point, you are so far from optimal that it's not even funny.
I'm glad you're having success, but please don't advocate this as a valid solution to the masses. For how cheap a junyard HEI can be had and rebuilt, there is no reason to do it this way.

Hail to the nobel prize winner.
The point of this post was to show that the car will run just fine without the quadracrap. There was a big discussion on this before. I mean people were saying no advance at all. The only reason I'm running it is because I don't have much money right now, and I take offense to being called a retart. That thing must be doing something right to be running a stock cam stock head car almost into the 12's.
