First check to make sure there is enough oil. This happened tomy friend. Then Make sure the gauge is hooked up. Check for something screwed into the block behind the distributor and check your fuses for the gauges. I don't know about the choke light. go to an autostore and buy a compression checker and screw it into the cylinder where the spark plug goes (make sure you dissconnect the power wire to the distributor) and crank the motor and make sure the piston is compressing the air. If it is post here againa nd we will try and figure out why it might not be running on all cylinders.

Did it have oil in in previously? I believe at lt least all the v-8's need 5 qts! Also, I am not sure of the effect, but too much oil is also bad. (I never asked, and never tried, and will never have this problem, so I do not know the symptoms)

Check timing/make sure plug wires are going to correct plugs, along w/ the compression test.

You say it's smoking, does it smell like oil burning, coolant burning, gas burning, or a comination?

What was wrong before (What did you fix to get the motor started?)

With all that info, the problem should be able to be narrowed down.

well first of all ill just let u know i know crap about the mechanics of an engine, im learning so bare with me guys....there was oil in it......old oil but its oil lol....the smoking is coming from the drivers side near the manifold....it might just be old oil spillage or gunk....but i dont know....another thing is that there is oil being leaked into my air filter from that breather hose, i think it is, going into my air cleaner

the only thing i have replaced was the plugs, ignition module, and the coil....the plugs were oil fouled before that.....and thisthig has been sitting all fall and winter so there was bound to be some stuff wrong but i think im in deeper then i thought....

i will test the compression tomorrow and get back to you about the results and we can go from there.....thanks for taking the time to help out a fellow 3rd gener

Before running the compression check, check that the plug wires running from the distributor are going to the correct spark plug. This could be causing several problems if it isn't.!!
