Testing Knock sensor
Alot of people in the archive talk about removing or not removing the knock sensor.. I don't plan on removing it. I would like to know how to test it to see if it is working. The reason is when the engine temp is not quite 195 if I step on it I get this clicking or pinging sound.. it eventually goes away once the engine get hot.. But I would like to get rid of the problem. The car never did it until my fuel pump started to fail last year (september or so), at that time it did it all the time. Now with the new pump it does it only when the engine is not completely hot. Please help, I don't want to wreck the engine (no way I can afford to rebuild it). Thanks

you can test it by looking at the knock counts with a scanner, it doesn't sound like it's working, or not working very well, try better grade of fuel a nd change your base timing

I had a close listen to the sound.. Actually you know it sounds more like puffing air. and not anything related to the knock sensor at all... and the sound only seems to be most prominant after the car has been hot, and let sit for a while, fire it up again, and it will do it only under acceleration/ load. until the engine is hot again.. Thanks for your help so far.. Any thoughts on this?

Okay... Had a leaky manifold on my left bank. The rear-most manifold bolt is a bit of a bugger to get at so it probably wasn't tightened properly. The bolt was actually missing and the leak blowing out the back! This produced exactly the symptoms you speak of.i.e: A pronounced 'TICK' when cold. You may be on to it.
As for your knock sensor, there is a basic method to test it.(This is from the factory service manual!) Start the engine and warm it up. While idling get down there near to the sensor and tap the block with a ball pein hammer. This simulates a knock and you should hear the RPM decrease as the timing is retarded. Knock sensors are simply a microphone, the interface electronics picks the desired 'knock' frequencys out of all the rest of the engine noises for detection. Simple but effective!

A poor man's way of checking the knock sensor is to let the car idle and tap on the block next to the sensor with a wrench. It should recognize the noise as knock and slow down the engine.
