Tire Removal + Recommendation
Tire Removal + Recommendation
This is something my father told me a long time ago.
Whenever you remove the tire on the car to do any sort of work, put the tire under the car. Why? Because if the car falls off the jack and/or jackstands, its just one more level of safety.
I apoligize for putting it here. I have a couple of friends that always work on there own cars and when I told them this it was a new idea to them that they liked.
Mr Moderater, move it if necessary.
Thanks

not always.
when im working at home or under the car, i usually dont do that... i have nice big stands, and i make sure they are seated correctly and are stable.
but if im at the track or on the side of the road or somthing, i do that.

We use jackstands when we are doing work to the brakes or tires. Other then that we jack it up and put the tires on cinder blocks. They hold it up like they were on the ground, so no worries. We also put chock blocks behind the rear tires to prevent rolling. :-)

Ive never had my car fall off of the jackstands. As long as theyre seated properly and on a good hard surface, the cars not going anywhere unless its either hit by another car or someone intentionally tries to push it off. My car has spent months on jackstands with no problems at all, sometimes w/o even having any suspention components attached to it to fall onto. One thing I that I do is to go to each corner as soon as I get the car up and give it some good pushes and tugs to make sure it wont fall. Even when I do this it doesnt even budge.

I always use a combination of every type of car-holding-up device when I work on my car. I'll put the car on jackstands then put ramps underneath the tires THEN sometimes put a jack under the k-member or differential (depending on what end I'm at)
Why do this? One time I had the car on jackstands and I was under there working on something for like a half hour. To pull myself out from underneath the car I grabbed onto the ground effects and pulled myself out. The second I go out from underneath the car it FELL violently off the jackstands. I guess it was a combination of putting the jacks under the car too quickly and not making sure they were 100% secure and me pushing my weight onto the car.
You can never have too many things holding the car up.
