intake and egr questions

Im having my car worked on, they said my egr valve needs replacement and that my intsake is clogged somehow, im wondering how an intake can get clogged enough where they have to take it off to clean it? Its gonna cost me a lot if they do this

The same thing that broke the egr is probably what is "clogging" your intake. Carbon buildup is very common but you dont have to take off the intake to get rid of it. Gm makes a product called top engine clean which is probably what they will use to clean out most of the carbon in the intake.
