Car wont hold idle????

I started up my new motor yesturday and i had it idling at about 1000-900 but i wasnt used to that with my 305 it would idle at about 1500 non computer controled. so today i played with the 2 carb screws on each side of the carb i have a holley avenger 660cfm and when i reved it today i heard a pop so i moved all the plug wires into the right spot and got the car to start but now i wont hold an idle above 500 rpm. i can rev it fine but when i let off the gas the car will die so is it the timing or the carb???

also the motor cam with a mild cam I.443 E.465 214/224 @.050 lift with 1.5 rockers and i also have longtube headers and dual exhuast and the cam in the motor sounds huge it sounds like it has more like .500 lift and the guy said it ran 13s in a 4000lb caprice so will the cam affect the idle because i really didnt and dont know what to expect from this car????

Did you adjust the idle screw also? I know that sounds obvious. You could also try advancing the timing if that doesn't work. Even if the cam has a rough idle, the car shouldn't stall if the carb is adjusted right.

readin your prob. start from scratch, timing first, make sure the distributer rotor is going toward no. 1, if not, make it so, make sure no. 1 piston is on top dead center when checkin the rotor, o.k.? and timing marks are lined if their availiable. If the car has one of those made in china chrome timing chain coners it'll have the little bolt on timing mark indicator off to the side of the cover, most factory timing marks are almost dead center, check all this, sounds like timing, also as you stated, you checked the wires, check em again, you still might have over looked them. As for the holy carb, those two screws are air/fuel, if you resolve the issue and get it to run, take and turn one screw in at a time until it starts to make the car run really rough, then back it out till it smooths out, then do the other the same way, that should getcha in the ball park, then the idle screw on the side of the carb. I'd do these adjustments after the engine has warmed up tho- there's a bit more accuracy that way, you didnt say whether you were electric choke or manual though, shouldnt matter, just warm it up some.

I GOT it running but its definitly running rich on the passenger side (black smoke) but still cant get idle about 500-600. i turned the distributer to get the motor to run as best as it could but i need to go to someone with a timing light. Now the idle screw where exactly is it? the only other screw i know is the one on the throttle bracket near the throttle cable.

i know those 2 screws about the air/fuel now but does one control air and one fuel or does each control one side of the motor?? (but i never tuouched it)

And again the idle screw should get the idle up??

Originally it idled around 1000 thats where id like to get it back up.
