My Speedometer quit working, how can I tell if its actually the speed sensor or not?

If its for a 86 then it has a mechanical speedometer cable. Check that its probably broken.

If it was the VSS you'd probably have an SES light?

hook a drill up to the speed sensor and spin it. if it spins then it is something in the housing. if it doesn't spin, it could be the vss or the cluster or a bad ground.
