Help! Code 53 is driving me nuts!

Hello Everyone,
I keep getting a code 53 on my car. It is a 1986 TA 305 4bl LG4. Car is all stock and has 120K on it. This is what I have replaced:

All Napa parts below:

1) EGR valve
2) EGR solenoid
3) EGR Solenoid connectors and wiring.
4) plastic hoses going from both above

Car runs perfect..i.e. no issues but the SES light keeps coming on.
Prior to putting the new EGR on I ran the car for a minute with it off to blow out all the carbon. I put the new parts on and it ran for like 600 miles with NO SES light but now it is back on all the time.

Any other ideas. Could the EGR valve have gone bad in 600 miles?

Thanks

Yes, it means that you have an overvoltage problem, Take your alternator and have it checked at your local auto parts store. I would also have the battery checked at the same time.

Thanks Trickster....I took your advice and checked the alternator charging voltage..it is a constant 14.5 at 2K RPM. The battery is also at 12.55 when everything is off.

My haynes book never says anything about an overvoltage problem for code 53, just EGR related items like the soleinod or valve.

It is very frustrating...I drove the car today in the morning about 8 miles and the SES light came on. Code 53. I drove it this afternoon for like 55 miles. Highway, city all over and NO SES light. Car runs perfect...never a problem...just the light pops on whenever it seems like it wants to....but always code 53.

If you have any other ideas to check let me know...next step, remove SES bulb.....(just kidding)

Check your wiring for the battery and also the power leads going to the ECM. Even though you had the battery and alternator tested, you are still getting a power spike from somewhere occassionally. Also check your fusible link from the alternator to the battery and the one to the starter solenoid.

Is your EGR vacuum operated(1 hose on the top and a diaphram) or is it the three solinoids. If its the vac. operated one you might have used the wrong washer. My aftermarket EGR came with a bag of washers and a little guide that told you which one to use. finally had to get one from the dealer.
