Lifter Install
Putting a new manifold and lifters on my '87 305.
I've got one bank almost done. There were a couple of lifters that were very tough getting out, and the new lifters are sticking when I try to cycle them in and out of the lifter bore.
The old lifters in the two bores that stuck are worn, and were also sticking.
What's this indicative of? What's the best and cheapest way of fixing this? Would polishing the part of the lifter that's sticking be OK?
I'm assuming it's a problem as the other 6 lifters were fine, no sticking, easy to get in and out.
Also, there's an oil feed hole on the side of the lifter. Does it matter which way that is oriented in the lifter bore?
Thanks,
Keith

That happened to me. It's hard to determine what really happened (as i imidiatly proceeded to blast them into my AC condensor via hockey stick). But its as if they developed a glaze-over on the lifter bore/lifter contact area.

I should have taken a picture of it...
The lifter bores didn't look like they had anything built up in them. The lifters may have. There was a bunch of crud in the lifter valley, but nothing metalic, looked like carbon build up to me.
I've shaded the picture to show where the wear is. It's not much, just some galling. The other lifters don't show this wear.
Other than that the galled lifters look like the other lifters.

It's ALIVE!!!!
Well, the new lifters are in, and it now has an Edlebrock Performer EGR intake on.
Seat of the pants it seems to have more power. If the weather cooperates I'll be taking it to the track tonight.
Has a bog right off the line, but that's the carb needing some tuning.
Also the ticking noise is gone, so I'm hoping the new lifters did the trick.
