Help the clueless person!

Okay I don't know anything about cars and I've asked a few friends that I have about the problem I'm having and no one can tell me. Even the guy that got me back into older camaros isn't helping...*glares at 84Camaro305*
Anyway I bought this nice white/gold 83 Camaro this year from someone who kept the thing in a garage it's entire life. They changed the oil every 3 months and drove it sometimes but they didn't do anything besides that. So when they wanted to sell it they replaced the shocks and struts, tires, head liner and speakers. They had kept it in a moist garage so it fried the speakers and made the head liner come down. They replaced that before getting rid of it, they wanted a steep price for it..6,000 dollars for a car that is older than I am. It has 27,000 miles on it and I was the first person to ever sit in the backseat. The interior is perfection and it still smells like a new car inside. So I have been driving it for a few months and I noticed that when I drove for awhile it would feel like the gas cuts off for a sec..then comes back, I had driven it the previous day with this problem but it didn't seem serious. On the way home the fuel kept cutting out more often and when stopped it would idle so hard that I thought it would die. I had to pump the gas to keep it going, when I got home I couldn't keep it going. My friend told me that it could be the fuel filter so we went and replaced that, it made things better but I still have the problem and I don't know what to do. Obviously it happens more often with the a/c on. I have been told that it could be various things... I am so clueless here..help!

looks like a nice car ... very nice ... sounds like the pump may be weak ... appears to be normaly asperated (carb) so there may be some passages cloged with varnish ... i dont know much about getting the codes from the computer but it might be a good idea to find someone with a scan tool or the knowledge to retrive the trouble codes (it can be retrived through the check engine light) i may be able to find the info if you cant find a better way ... from the looks of things you got a nice ride it would be well worth haveing a pro fix it ... take care ... tao

Welcome aboard. Nice looking car.

Start with the ignition. These cars are known to have weak coils and ignition control modules (both part of the distributor). Most likely, with that few miles, the entire ignition is original, so give it a thorough tune-up (spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap & rotor, and the aforementioned coil & module). You'll probably cover it with one of these, but good plugs/wires/cap/rotor can mask a weak coil or module, which will leave you walking sometime down the road.

Also, time will degrade this parts as well as miles, so don't assume with low miles that they should be okay.

For the idle speed, try increasing the idle speed a tad.

Remove the air cleaner assembly and you will reveal the lovely quadrajet carburetor. (They really are great pieces. Great milage, unmatchable by any aftermarket performance piece. But yet great power capabilities). Anyway, on the right front corner of the q-jet, you will see the throttle arm. You can verify it's the throttle arm by flipping it back a tad. You will hear the RPM's increase. If it wants to die, have a buddy get in and hold the gas just enough so that it doesn't. You will see a screw. This is a throttle stop screw. IIRC, clockwise will raise the idle speed. By the way, what is the RPM when it wants to die?

Be careful, that fan is spinning pretty fast. Don't let anything fall down there, like an appendage. That won't feel good.

And welcome to TGO, i must say, you have a mighty fine looking car, immaculate on the outside. Take care of it!

Add some coolant while you're changing the spark plugs, too.

My car's sister!!!

It looks EXACTLY like mine except for the hood stripes and door bumpers!! Same paint sceme, same wheels, white lettered tires, same interior colors!!

Mine is a HO car, so its got a different engine and a 5 speed, but otherwise identical!

BTW - mines an '83 too

Do like five7kid said, change out the ignition components. A car is meant to be driven, leaving it set in a garage can cause just as much damage as beating on it. Parts corrode and deteriorate, especially electrical.

A thorough tune-up should get you going, if not, check the fuel pump.

As a sidenote, how is the fuel in it? Maybe it is going bad.
