305 cam transplan!

ok, so now i've learned that the 305 with a 5 speed has a differant cam than the automatic. can i just get a cam from a 5 speed 305 (through a chevy dealer i supose) and have it put in my automatic 305 or will this cause a problem of some sort with the cars computer and other part?

Yes you can swap in the cam that came in the 5-speed,but why? You wont feel a difference!
If you go through all the work of installing a cam,why not put in something better that will help you make some decent power.Unless
you get the cam for free, stay away from it.
I ran a 210/220 .533/.544 cam in my 90 TA,
using the stock chip, and it ran fine.Just make sure the cam you select is a TPI computer compatable cam.
Hope this helps,
Nitro Don

Rok,

Check out the Comp Cams web site or catalog. Look for something with a .450" to .48" lift range and 112° - 114° LSA. There are several choices designed for use with computer controlled engines and will provide very good power gains and street-friendly operation. If your engine is an '87 or newer, you're lucky in that you can choose a roller cam.

If you have an 85 or a 90-92 car, don't bother with the swap, because you already have the same cam as a 5 speed car. If you have a car that really is peanut cammed, I'd go with a grind better than what GM put in these cars stock, like an LT4 production cam or something similar.
