away from the radiator should a fan be?
I just bought a car that has a 350TBI in it, and it runs a tad hot at idle (225), and I noticed that it has a direct connected engine fan (like no clutch) so I thought it was odd that it ran hot. Well upon further inspection I saw that the fan is at LEAST 7 inches from the radiator, if not further. i always thought they should be closer. Think this is my problem?? Think my cooling problem will get worse by swapping to a clutch fan but making it closer to the radiator??

Fan shroud?
The shroud edge should be about at the mid-point of the fan blades.
No fan shroud, you say? That about covers it.

I never said it didn't have a fan shroud, it does. I'm just concerned that the distance from the front of the fan and the radiator is HUGE, like 7-9 inches.

The forward most edge of the fan should be .5-1" away from the radiator. You need some fan spacers. Or you could put in an electric fan that mounts right to the radiator.
