My car has led me to drinking!!!!!!
can anyone help me with this problem??? I have a 91 Z28 with the 305 TPI. The problem is that I can start the car when it sits for awhile then it idles for about four minutes then it justs dies. I can rev it up to good RPMs while it running then it just goes flat line and won't restart. At first it thought it was the control module but so I put another new one in it did the same thing. It has new coil, wires, cap, rotor, and control module, and new fuel pump, and fuel filter. What would be the problem I start the new season racing on Sat need to fix now before the makes me a drunk. Thank you
First of all you want to start with the basics: do you have a vacuum leak? Is your emissions equipment working properly(all those stupid little sensors!)?
What happens when it dies? The rpms just fall and a check engine light comes on? Is it flashing any check engine lights? Do you smell fuel?
The more info you give us the better we can help. Whats your mothers maiden name? Place of birth?

Red,
Check the pickup coil for cracks and continuity when heated. You can also check the reluctor for cracks. The two must work together to produce an adequate signal for the EST/HEI module to amplify and operate the ignition coil.
A cracked pickup coil can work when cold, but will expand slightly when heated, opening the circuit and causing no spark. Wait for the engine to cool thoroughly, and it might start right up again, only to die again after the distributor gets warm. You should be able to read between 500 and 1,500 ohms on a good pickup coil.

Sounds to me like it woun't idle after it switches into closed loop, which would lead me to think computer problem. I think that if you would disconnect your oxygen sensor, it would cause the computer to stay in Open Loop, abling you to fix the problem..

Dad bought a formula firebird to resell and it was doing the very same thing. It was the 305 tpi also.Turns out it was the oxygen sensor.

When I bought my 86 IROC the previous owner said it would die after starting (305 TPI). He said he had been told the injectors needed "professional" cleaning. IT would restart, but die again. I did run a bottle of injector cleaner through it (even though he said he did it regularly). But the thing that helped most was to turn the key on, wait till the fuel pump kicked off and then start it. It has only died once in the 2.5 months I've owned it. When an engine dies it ran out of gas or spark (unless the air filter is plugged tight with dirt and it runs out of air).

Well worked on the car most of the day. i had a mechanic tell me that if you let them sit a lot the fuel pump goes bad so I went out and bought a fuel pressure gauge set up for I could tell what pressure I had at the schrader valve and when I hooked it up I got very little pressure but then it climbed up to 40 psi slowly after turning on the key a couple of times. So I checked the fuel filter clean as a whistle. Then I turned on the key fuel pumped out of the line great. So I took the fuel lines apart at the manifold turned on the key again great pressure there to. But my gauge says 0 or very little pressure then it will slowly climb on up. Is it the fuel pressure regulator or what is it? It has me stumped.
