Car wont start

I was just getting ready to go to the parts store to get some prices on things and I go to start my car and nothing.......It will crank and crank and crank but it will not turn over. I just started it this morning and I had no problems starting it, it turned over almost as soon as I flipped the key. I was thinking it is something electrical but i dont know. I checked all the fuses theyre all good. Could it be slipped timing? The SES light never even came on. I think it is the distributor now that i think about it the car was making a funny sound when i shut it off but that has been going on for awhile and wasnt really noticeable so i didnt think anything of it. it was hard to describe sound it was kinda like schhaaaweeee...Is there anyway I can test it to determine if its the coil or distributor? Thanks alot guys for any help you can give

I'm not sure why, but I had an uncontrollable urge to come in here and see what the topic was about.

Start with the basics (pun intended). Fuel/air, ignition, and compression. We can presume that the compression is being developed since the engine is cranking, but can reserve judgement on that for later.

The easiest thing to check is the ignition. Remove a plug wire and have an assistant crank the engine while you carefully hold the end of the wire about 5mm from a good engine ground. You should se a strong blue spark across the gap. If not, you need to dig into the ignition system. If the spark is present, move on to the fuel system.

Make sure you have fuel pressure and delivery, You first need to establish whether the pump is running the 2-second prime cycle when the ignition is turned on. Presuming that occurs, test for fuel pressure at the rear if the right fuel rail. If you don't have a pressure gauge, you should at least be able to depress the center core stem of the Schrader valve and determie if the rails have any pressure.

I'm guessing that one of those two systems will reveal some sort of problem. Which one?

check the connectors on top of the coil and make sure that they are completely seated and not loose. i had a problem similar to this happen to me at the track last night and ended up having to have the car towed home because i couldn't get it to start, thinking that the fuel pump had gone out on me. after checking for fuel pressure and determining that i have good pressure, i checked for spark and got none. turned out that the connectors on top of the coil had wiggled theirself loose somehow and were not making a connection thus the no start...and if it did start, when giving it throttle it would die. hope this helps some.
