can't read engine codes

i've tried connecting A and B of the ALDL port, and turned to on, but the SES light does not blink.. and the fan does not turn on.

any hints?

Get out your trusty meter. Check the reesistance between the 'A' socket and a good ground. There should be 0 ohms, or very close to it.

Turn on the ignition, then check the 'B' terminal for voltage to ground. You should read 5.0VDC or very close to it.

If you can read voltage at 'B' but no ground at 'A', you can connect the 'B' terminal to any good ground to start the diagnostic request. If you have no voltage at 'B', you'll need to work backward to the ECM and check the connections there.

Does the light come on when you switch the ignition on? If not, your bulb may have gone.

Just a thought, you probably already accounted for that.

Yes it could be that, too. Remove the passenger side footwell cover and check to see if you have a box tucked up in there, with 2 chunky connectors going to it. It's normally mounted vertically against the dash, on the side closest the door. That would be the computer. No computer, no flashy flashy.

I would think you have the ECM. Your torque converter needs lock up amongst other things. It's just that you don't have an ECM controlled carburetor.
