ANYONE HAVE A POSSIBLE DIAGNOSIS FOR THESE SYMPTOMS?

The tach jumps around irratically while driving. I've moved all wires away from the coil and tach wires and it still does it. Also, there is oil around the #1 & 3 spark plugs. Runs strong with a slight surging (once in a while) when in closed loop. In open loop, hesitation with moderate acceleration or going up a hill.

What is it? TPI, TBI, carb? And does the actual idle of the car jump around with the tach?

It's TBI. Only the needle flops around, the actual rpm's are steady. Thanks.

I had the tach problem a few years ago, replaced tach filter, tried new tach, nothing helped. Eventually found that when tach wire and coil wire were seperated, it quit. I slipped a vac. hose over the tach wires entire length to insulate it. Overboard....but it worked.

I've learned that sometimes you HAVE to go "overboard" to take care of a problem, for lack of a less drastic means. I replaced the distributor and now all is well. The old one was under warranty so I didn't have to put out any money. Thanks.
