Vortec 400

What do you guys think of this buget power combo.

sbc 400 ( i can get the block rather cheaply)

stock Vortec heads.

summit 1102 cam (not too much lift for the heads)

holley 750 on a duel plane.

Reuse stock crank. new Pistons, Reuse either my 89 l98's 5.7's or the stock rods.

What else can i do? i was thinking of using my tpi on the 400 but im not sure if all the sensors and whatnot will fit. Any comments on anything ive said here?

right, DD2000 predicts this combo with large tube headers and mufflers.

358hp @ 4500, and 465 ft.lbs from 2k-4k rpm.

Flat torque till 4200 or so. hp goes from 175 at 2k to 355 at 4500.

I like these curves and numbers because the engine runs out of breathe around 5500 and buy 6000 its lost 50hp off peak.

which is nice because i only RARELY intend to rev the motor to 6k.

I know DD2k insn't the more acurate. but its still promising.

With Vortec heads your TPI intake won't fit. The only TPI intake that will work with Vortec heads is the Scoggins-Dickey $400 Vortec-TPI intake, and there may be a waiting list for it....

The sensors will all fit. But that's not the issue. The problem is, TPI chokes a stock 305. What do you think it's going to do to a bigger motor with better-flowing heads?

Apart from that.... You can do a whole lot better than that old generic cam. People seem to be getting great results with the Comp XE series and those heads and a Perf RPM manifold. That seems to be a great combo. The XE268 is about the limit with those heads. Change the valve springs no matter what cam you run.
