Backfires? Lots of questions..............
Hey, I was wondering what is wrong with my car, When I drive it a while it always heats up.If drive it enough the car will almost always redline the temp gauge. But it always returns to about 220, I was wondering if this was bad, and if it is, what should I do so my car will run a lot cooler because it is getting close to summer and it gets to almost 120 degrees out here in Tucson,Az. And when it gets that hot my camaro runs like crap! After my car heats up past the 220 mark on the temp it stutters when I try to take off at a stoplight and then it will shoot a huge black cloud of smoke out the exhaust. And it will do it at every stoplight unless I be very gentle with the gas and letting out the clutch. Not to mention I take off slower than a GEO METRO! I don't have any problems when I get going though. My airdam is intact and there is nothing wrong with it, should I get another thermostat? Or should I get the fans rigged so they run all the time? I don't know how to work on cars too good because I am still learning how. Does anyone know how I could fix the whole backfire thing? Because I was going to bring it to the mechanic and have them look at it but I really don't trust mechanics too much because it always seems like they find something very expensive wrong. Also, is it bad to have debris in the engine coolant reservoir? I know this is a lot of questions but I would like to know what to expect when I take it to the mechanic, or if it's like an easy fix that I could do? PLEASE HELP ME OUT!!
maybe a t-stat problem, cheap and easy to replace. make sure the fan(s) are working and coming on when they should, check timing, temp senser, preasure test cooling system and cap.

check your t stat. check your water pump first. open the radiator make sure there is enough coolant and run the motor. look for coolant flow. Also make sure your fan/fans are working. You need to state what your car has to more accurately trace track the problem down. the back fire could be due to running hot. just need to be specific about your car.
Tune the engine. All of that sounds like symptoms of severely retarded timing. once you get the engine runnign right you will be placing MUCH less strain on the cooling system (you might have cooling problem, too, but there's NO point in upgrading a cooling system if the engine isn't running fairly well to begin with).

Does it sound like the backfiring is coming from the exhaust or from the carburetor. When mine was backfiring through the carb. my problem was that a spark plug wire was laying on the header and burnt right through it. Also this was causing my car to run a little warm. But I would say check the timing too. And being out in AZ go with a 160* thermostat.
