slipping alt/water pump belt

I just put on all the 87 style acc on the engine. new alt, new water pump, used brackets, pulleys and power steering pump.

It's on a 350 TPI.

the alt/water pump belt keeps slipping on me. The alt seems to be out of alignment with the other pulleys... I have tried shimming it, and it's as close as I can get. There's only so much play. It's not a matter of belt tension being too lose I don't think.

I've put on alternators before and never had a problem with getting the belt tight.

also the crank pulley doesn't appear to be wearing evenly.. there's light rust in one spot on the ribbs that never cleaned up where the rest has. It seems to have a slight wobble to it as well. I'm going to try removing it and replacing it to get rid of that.

the odd thing is that it only slips at low RPM, like under 1000 with no load. Anything above that and it's fine.. full throttle and no slipping at all ( which is why i can't see it being the belt tension )

any ideas?

There should be a bracket about the thickness of one washer behind the alt. There's a spacer that bolts to the alt also; the alt doesn't hang out in free space, in case that's how yours is.

You can see the washer I used in this pic; the bracket right above the spacer won't go down there like it belongs, because the AIR valve (which the bracket is for) hits this (non-stock) valve cover.

I forgot about the AIR valve bracket. The AIR system is not installed on the car. I do have that spacer .. the one with the support bracket that bolts to the back of the alt and lets it pivot... just no spacer between it and the head.

thanks.. will try that tomorrow.
