major oil leak but dipstick shows no major drop in oil level???

major oil leak but dipstick shows no major drop in oil level???
Hi all.... I have a 88 pontiac firebird formula 305... during and after driving thier is smoke that comes out from the top of the hood..also after stopping from a drive a good sized amount of engine oil will leak to the ground before eventually stopping. I believe the smoke is coming from oil leaking from the valve covers and onto the manifolds??? but why is the dipstick showing no major loss in oil? I have checked dipstick at both engine hot and engine cold.. both times it shows level to be perfectly full????? Is it safe to drive while the car smokes until problem is fixed??
