How reliable are Mallory Unilites?

I picked one up used for cheap, but upon testing it I found the module was fried. Damn hillbillies.

Anyway, replacing it will cost $90 from jegs or summit. I'd like to keep my sp[iffy distributer, but I don't wanna be shelling out $90 frequently everytime the module goes. Can I expect the one I would buy to last a good long time or not?

So far it seems like the reliability for you is 0%.

The MSD 6-AL, which REPLACES the module, will work with the unilite system too! The MSD 6-AL is about $175 but I've not seen many of those go out!! A friend of mine has a unilite system and from what he says, the modules are crap!! I'd just buy an MSD box if you like the unilite!

does anyone else know if this is true? Would an MSD work with a fried unilite module? They have that wierd photooptic pickup thing..I would think an MSD couldn;t replace. IF so..it'd solve my problem.

I just did. Summit says the Unilite will NOT work with an MSD, without a working ign. module.

Thay do however sell a surge protector for the module for 33.95.

So..basically another $130. Hmm. Thats steep...but it might be worth it I guess.

Kinda weird the MSD won't work unless you have a working ign. module since that's what the MSD box does with other ignitions.... it ELIMINATES the ign. module all together!! I don't trust Summit anyway, so who knows! Maybe I'll call Jegs or Nextgen!!

I'm not surprised...I didn;t really expect that it would. The Unilite has that photo optic sensor that replaces the pickup coil as part oif the module. The MSD still needs a pickup coil.

get a junk yard hei distributor (thats in good condition!) in exe..no play in shaft. then get a msd 6al box and bypass the stock crap called a "module". ....or just replace the uni-module and YES you can run a msd with a unilite just fine it says so right in the instructions that come with the msd!

Well, here it is. My Dad has a Mallory Unilite system on his car. He got it for a cheapy cheapy price too. This year he bought stocks in Summit because the module fried 3 times in 1 month(2 times were in the same week)

madmax said it best, "So far it seems like the reliability for you is 0%." Guess that works for my dad too!

I just had one of these go out. It lasted for a few years, but then one day, poof, no go. I even had the Mallory "spike" protector, which is supposed to keep any voltage problems from killing the module. Was also using the Mallory resistor and Promaster coil. Anyway, will go with an MSD/HEI setup very soon.

Mallory email tech was pretty cool, and they sent me a PDF on how to test the photoptic sensor, but I HATE having to worry about that stupid thing blowing again. What if it decides to die pulling out into traffic next time?

My unilite has been doing just fine in my bird for the past 2 and a half years, I don't have the surge protector. And most of last year my alternator was junk, I'm guessing it was spiking quite a bit, My computer would shut the power off to the car, but the unilite worked just fine.
