Here are a few questions

Ok I am the one with the Olds Motor in the 89 RS...It's a V8 and on both sides of the block in the same place, it says 5L any idea on the size? Is it the 5 liter 307? But the oil filter that goes on it fits a 350 and a 307...
Ok now the major thing...My car is overheating and smoke is comin out of the vavlve covers. I have replaced the thermostat. My motor will run pretty cool for a little while maybe 30 minutes, then it starts heating up. But my radiator is still COOL!!! Is it my water pump or something else? Also the heat only comes on sometimes???
And another thing...while on the lift today i turned the back tires and they went opposite ways...Limited Slip?? any help would be greatly appreciated...SOrry about the long post

I haven't seen a lot of GM motors where the 5 liter and the 5.7 liter oil filters are the same. The 5.7 liter filter usually has a wider lip. I would go to autozone and look through their book for a filter that fits the car that you got the motor from. Its probably a 5 liter since that is pretty much what a 307 is (302 up to like 307 is a 5 litre).

FOr the cooling problem you might want to check that your water pump is flowing the right way. I forget what our cars use whether reverse rotation or standard, but the olds motor may be opposite so if you used that water pump it could be spinning the wrong way with the belt movement. Also if you took it off, put the air dam under the car back on. It is needed.

I'm not sure about the back end. If it is limited slip then I don't think that it is the standard rear end. Because I know my RS came with all of the goodies and it doesn't have a limited slip. I'm trying to think of whether or not mine did it when I checked my gear ratio but I can't remember...

Good luck,
Mike

I would say you have the 307 in there. Nice engines! I had one in an '82 Cutlass I used to have.

As far as overheating, have you checked the thermostat? If it is stuck closed, then the water would not circulate and the radiator would remain cool. This would also explain why you don't have heat.

If the thermostat is good, then definitely check your water pump. For $30, you might even want to replace it just for good measure.

The rear end sounds like an open carrier
ie) "One wheel wonder"

Good luck,

Thomas.
