I would start With checking to see if there is a bad wire going to the sensor. and then Replace Sensor if neccesary.

The Sensor you are looking for is in the front of the intake
See Pic Below:

Left Pic 85-88 Intake Right 89-92 Intake
Note: (Left) Intake has a coolant temp(a) and a cold start sensor for the ninth injector.
The Right Intake only has the coolant temp sensor (a) for cold start and coolant temp for the computer

my mechanic told me the sensor was fine but that the wires were burnt or something ... i have the HSR, so im assuming that the sensor is right under the tb on the intake manifold. ill check for any burns on the wires, but if the wires look fine, then maybe it's the sensor?

it's weird though... the car drives fine 99% of the time, and then all of a sudden, i feel something weird go through the car, i see the light, and then the car acts fine and the light goes away. weird huh? maybe that'll help diagnose my problem a little bit better

The wire is probably grounding out on something. Since its intermintant this may not be something youll be able to see very easily. Sensors dont usually go in and out of operation like that, so i would have to say it is fine.
