ARGH! What is WRONG!!! Where's my GUN!

Ok, so the 'ol 80 T/A fails aircare, slightly, and so upon inspection I discover the distributor cap/rotor look like crap.

So, I replace them, reusing the ignition coil within the distributor cap. The rotor was fixed with 2 screws and I put the new one on exactly in the position I found the old one, as with the cap.

Well, it doesn't start! ARGH! The carb makes some popping noises so obviously this is a timing problem of some sort.

Obviously I'm missing something pretty damn simple here, for ****s and giggles could someone run me through a possible list of things I might have neglected?!?!

Oh, the engine is a 301 ci. (4.9Litre) pontiac.

Feeling stupid,
Hype.

I'd bet a buck you have a few wires swapped in the wrong location after you changed the cap.
