How do I swap to an electronic speedo?
Okay, I bought a 140MPH speedo from a dude online, and its on its way now. I would like to have al lthe stuff ready when it gets here. Heres my questions:
1.) I know I need a VSS, but a.)will it bolt right in to my tranny b.) will and f-body VSS or even any GM VSS work, or do I need one for 3.23 gears?
2.) I know there is a D/A convertoer module by the ECM, but does it have anything to do with the ECM? Can i just swap it?
3.) Will the cluster wire up correctly to the dash? There is a printed circuit on the back that plugs into the dash. Will all of my lights and gauges work correctly? Ill re-wire this **** if I have to.

From: out of my mind; be back in 5 minutes....
Car: 1989 Firebird Formula
Engine: Internal Combustion
Transmission: Completed
Axle/Gears: ones that turn.
Look for a link on the 'tech' page in my sig...that will tell you how to hook it up; the only question is, will the cluster fit your stock dash? I'm not sure how much things changed between the 82-84 dash and those from later years....

You need to pull the old Speedo cable connection in the transmission and count the teeth, then go and get a VSS with the same # of teeth. I know at the dealer they are quite pricey. Your ECM doesn't support an electronic speedo, and if I remember correctly the electronic speedo doesn't even use the ECM, but a piggybacked speed buffer like the one that Pete describes on his page. I know this because a guy in our club here has an 86 carbed T/A that has the 140mph electronic speedo and he has no ECM and it works fine.
By the way, last time I checked that little yellow speed buffer was about $45 at the dealer.

15.556 @ 86.65mph, Nov 10, 2000.... I know it sucks.. but it will get better!
