Code 44......
Code 44......
Ok guys, ever since i got my 88 gta 350 last year the ses light comes on and goes off. I bought one of the little code reader things and i used it. It came up code 44 (lean o2 sensor, i think it was 44 or 42). So i put a new o2 sensor in and reset the computer. The light still comes on. I've been told that these gta's have 2 o2 sensors. I replaced the one connected to the manifold on the right side (facing the car). Where is the other one. I also have a gutted cat, could that make the code come up. Any suggestions?

T Dogg,
You '88 has a single O2 sensor. You error code (DTC) can be caused by various things. The O2 was probably indicating correctly, and you actually have a mixture problem. Check the TPS voltage, vacuum hoses, PCV valve, fuel pressure and regulator function.
If everything there checks O.K., your gutted cat may be causing the O2 to run cold, which will indicate a lean condition. An easy fix for that is to install a heated oxygen sensor. The '94 Chevy trucks with 350 TBI used a 3-wire (heated) O2 sensor. These are easy to install and wire for 12VDC power, and should eliminate a clod O2 problem.

Another possibility that occurred to me is that the AIR injection system may be leaking air past the diverter valve and into the exhaust manifolds, causing an artificially lean reading. Make sure the AIR system is working properly, and that there are no exhaust leaks upstream of the O2 sensor.
A CTS sensor that reports too high can also cause a lean mixture, which would result inlower power, hot operation, and lean mixtures.
Just a thought.

I'm not a mechanic so TPS voltage and regulator function aren't too familiar to me. I need to know ways i can check these things (and the locations) w/out having to spend to much money on tools. Also what should my fuel pressure be at?
