Could either one be caused by a lean fuel mixture condition??

Ok, the reason i'm asking (forgot to add that) is that when I start up the engine it starts doing 1 or the other. Had a mechanic check it out (was towed to other side of town) and said that a dent in the bottom of my oil pan could contribute to it. I would believe him except 1) it's a real small dent 2) It's been there since I've had the car (early August) and has never done this before.
I'm bringing it back home tonight and don't wanna have anything bad happen and would like all the troubleshooting advice i can get.
The sound is coming from the center of the engine, and sounds like the mechanical fan hitting the fan cover (but it's not the fan). Any help would be very much appreciated!!
