An open eliment air filter basicly is an metal top and bottem and no middle piece so you can acutally see the filter element. They do flow more than a single snorkle and are about 25 bucks at the parts store just make sure to ask for a drop base.

An open element is basically any kind of air filter that is not covered by a breather assembly. The only down side to an open element is that you may go through filters faster... I have an Edelbrock open element on mine, and the filter can be cleaned and re-used. As far as I know you can do the same with K&N and a few others... Even if yours can't be cleaned... they are only like $4 anyways... not a big deal.
