WHAT IS AN OPEN ELEMENT?
IS IT LIKE A CARB HAT? HOW MUCH DO THEY COST AND WHAT DO THEY DO? DO THEY ADD POWER AND HOW MUCH? I AM NOT VERY ENGINE SMART BUT I AM GETTING IT BY ASKING ?'S LIKE THESE.
An open eliment air filter basicly is an metal top and bottem and no middle piece so you can acutally see the filter element. They do flow more than a single snorkle and are about 25 bucks at the parts store just make sure to ask for a drop base.
An open element is basically any kind of air filter that is not covered by a breather assembly. The only down side to an open element is that you may go through filters faster... I have an Edelbrock open element on mine, and the filter can be cleaned and re-used. As far as I know you can do the same with K&N and a few others... Even if yours can't be cleaned... they are only like $4 anyways... not a big deal.
