Ok, me and my trusty flashlight climbed up onto the block (Thank God I'm small
) and I was able to get these numbers from the rear ledge of the block.
3970010, which according to www.mortec.com, is a GM 350 block from 69-80. Also I say 4GM which leads be to believe it's a 4 bolt GM block. Where can I get the actual year? Vader said there should be a four digit date code, but I could not see it. Is it beside the cast number, or should I be looking elsewhere?
I was told the it was a 350 out of a 79 Camaro, and it is a 350, but I want to be sure as to the block's year.
Thanks in advance

There is no code on the casting for 4-bolt mains, because the casting is identical for 2- and 4-bolt ones. There's no difference until after they're machined. So the 4GM means something else.
The number you should be looking for is one letter followed by 3 numbers, it will look something like B138. This example would indicate a block cast on the 13th day of the B'th month (Feb) in a year ending in 8, most likely 78 in the case of a 010 casting. The number in question will be close to the casting #.
I used to have both a 78 and a 79 Z28, both with 010s, AFAIK both 2-bolt.
