setting timing questions for vac advance

ok here we go, my distributor should be here tommorrow and i need to get my engine running
(been working on this for a month). I have a timing light and know basically what to do with it, my engine is supposed to be set at 6 BTDC, currently at 0 (just adjusted valve lash)When I start my engine is the mark on the harmonic balancer supposed to line up with the 6 on the timing mark constantly as it rotates? Is that the purpose of the light to see the marking line up? And as far as advancing the timing at the timing mark I would turn the distributor counter clockwise, correct? Also I would need to rotate the crankshaft one more time to 0 before installing the distributor for the number one piston to be at TDC and install it with the rotor pointed between the 1 and 8 terminals on the distributor cap, correct? let me know if i'm missing anything yet, i want this car running tommorrow!!!!! thanks in advance
