I have broken the distibuter gear twice in the last 2 weeks. My ? is what would be causing this to happen both times it happened while cruising down the street wasn't even under a load or high rpm. I don't understand what would cause this to happen

Foreign matter in the oil; jamming the oil pump gear teeth.

 

well I pulled the motor out tonight to take a look at what happened to it and found that the pickup screen had broken off at the end of the tube. The oil pump had sucked up some junk from the bottom of the pan and jammed up. Guess it is time to rebuild.

 

Rebuild what? The pump or the engine? Oil pumps are cheap enough that you should just replace the pump.

Melling M55 and a 55-s pickup. Mr. Gasket #26 pressure spring, too, if you can.
