Fan Refuses to turn on - even after new sensor! Why?!?

OK, first of all, I mistakenly replaced to coolant sensor instead of the fan sensor. However, after I figured out where that darn fan sensor was, I disconnected the wire, and grounded out the connector - sure enough, the fan went on. So, you would think that the fan sensor was the problem, right?

Wrong. I put in the new fan sensor, but the fan still won't go on when it's supposed to!

What could possibly be the problem? That doesn't even make sense, does it? I didn't put any sealants on the threads of the sensor either.

Anyone know what's going on here? What did I miss?

Do you have a stock fan switch installed? What is the temp getting up to? With a stock switch, it won't come on til about 238*...

My fan used to turn on at about 220 before, but I let it go past 240 and it still didn't come on. I keep the a/c on when in town to keep the fan on, but I'm sure I'll forget to turn it on one day and overheat the engine or worse so I need to get this fixed!

I don't think it can be a fuse or the relay, because the fan came on when I grounded out the connector for the sensor. Or am I wrong?

By the way, I have a '92 RS (305 TBI).

Any more ideas for me?

did you put pipe thread tape on the sensor threads? this can keep the sensor from grounding and completing the circuit.

How is that possible? If there was a blown fuse in the line somewhere before the sensor, how could your fans have come on when you grounded them out - the circuit would not be able to complete itself if there was a blown fuse. Or is there something else I am missing here?

I'm sick of this stupid fan problem! I don't want to take it in and pay $100 to fix such a silly little problem. Anyone else have any ideas as to what the heck the problem is?

when you say the fan sensor, are you referring to the cooling fan relay? if not you might try that. it's located on the firewall on the driver's side. theres 2 that look alike in the corner, it's the outer one. i have a 92 RS also and had the same problem, but mine was the coolant temp sensor. also had same problem on my 89 and it was the fan relay on that. hope this helps some!

Had the same problem. I feel your pain and frustration as I tried to order the fan switch from the Chevy house here and unfortunately, the parts dept has difficulty spelling "GM" let alone providing me with the correct part. Therefore they were of very little help.

Ordered a new one from JEGS.com, Fan switch, P/N 533-4026. “Pricey” but worth every
penny. Works like a champ now!

Cheers!
