That looks like the stock intake that came on my car. Is your car a 1987 Firebird or there abouts? It has power going to it for the MAF, which measures the amount of air coming into the engine. If you eliminate it and put a filter right on the Throttle Body, you're going to be stuck in Limp Home mode. The MAF is a very important piece in our cars, it's output goes to the ecm, and the ecm calculates the pulse width of the injectors and timing, based on it's input and input of other sensors.

THE MISTICWIZARD IS EXACTLY RIGHT. ITS THE INTAKE OFF YOUR 86 TRANSAM. THE OVAL OPENING HOOKS TO THE FLEXIBLE RUBBER GOING TO THE THROTTLE BODY, AND THE ROUND END ATTACHES TO THE AIR CLEANER CANISTER BEHIND THE PASSENGER SIDE HEADLIGHT. YOUR PLASTIC INTAKE SITS BEHIND THE RADIATOR, AND THE MAF ROUTES UNDER THE OVERFLOW TUBE AND HEATER HOSE (I THINK). THE BIGGEST RESTRICTION IS THE CANISTER. YOU CAN INCREASE THE AIR FLOW A LOT BY REMOVING THE CANISTER AND ATTACHING THE AIR CLEANER TO THE END OF THE MAF. IT REALLY WAKES THE ENGINE UP BETWEEN 4000 AND 4500 RPM. I STARTED WITH THE STOCK PAPER ELEMENT JUST BLOCKING ONE END OFF WITH CARDBOARD AND DUCT TAPE, AND PUSHING THE OTHER END ONTO THE MAF TO TRY IT OUT. (A MORE PERMANENT FIX WAS TO GLUE THE LID OFF A CITRANALLA (SP?) BUCKET TO THE AIR CLEANER. IT FITS PERFECTLY. I LATER WENT TO A K&N BUT COULD SEE LITTLE DIFFERENCE. THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE WAS TAKING THE AIR FILTER OUT OF THE CANISTER. I HAVE SINCE CHANGED TO A 3 INCH PIECE OF EXHAUST PIPE GOING OVER THE HEATER HOSES, AND STILL DON'T FEEL MUCH DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THAT AND THE ORIGINAL PLASTIC ONE IN YOUR PICTURE.

wrong. unplugging the maf does not put the car into limp home mode. all it does is change the ecm's way of calculating the amount of air coming in from the maf sensor to calculating through other information such as engine rpm

obvoiusly this is not quite as accurate as using the maf, but it will not be in limp home mode

in any case, putting an open element filter directly on the throttle body will bring hot air into the engine while the stock setup brings cooler air in since it is not right on top of the engine
