I recently purchased a set of Crane gold roller rockers from a member here and now I need to get of new pushrods since I'll be changing from self-aligning to guideplates. I don't know what kind I should get. Comp cams has several types/styles, as well as different types/styles from other companies. Do i need one-piece pushrods? Chromemoly or is steel okay? I know I need heat-treated for the guideplates. My engine is modified, but not extremely. I have Holley Stealthram intake, SLP51006 cam (about .500" lift intake/exhaust), WorldProducts Sportsman II heads, CompCams "R" series hydraulic roller lifters, and some stout springs(They came used with the heads, they're double springs with the dampner for roller springs). I've been having problems with breaking rocker studs, this is why I've decided to buy the roller rockers (to ensure no binding of the rockers on the stud). I want to place an order tonight so that I can get the pushrods by next weekend so I can install my guideplates/pushrods/rockers next weekend.

I really don't know how much money I need to spend on the pushrods. Obviously, I want to spend as little as possible without breaking pushrods. Can I get away with buying the $30-$40 summit brand heat-treated pushrods?

One last thing, I used an adjustable length pushrod to check for correct valve geometry, and to me, it looks like 7.1" is the correct length for pushrod. Does this sound right? needing a shorter pushrod than stock? I used a piece of paper between the roller tip and the valve stem to check for movement. There was a spot worn on the paper about the size of 1.5 penny thicknesses, and 7.2" (stock) was about 2 penny thicknesses (I don't have a ruler )

I will try and help as much as I can. I have guide plates too and I bought the summit hardened push rods. They cost me like 100 or so if I remember right. They were the one piece, molley ones. As for your length, I couldn't tell you because I have a different setup. I came up with around 8 because of my heads. The checker is probably right though. Hope that helps

 

A good set that you will be able to run w/ the guideplates will cost you a good $90-100. I ended up getting a set of TrickFlow chromoly pieces from a buddy for cheap since he re-worked his setup and ended up needing shorter pushrods...
