Too much coolant cause overheating?
Will too much coolant cause overheating? My reservoir is totally full...The garage I took it to to put my stall convertor on did this...could this cause overheating???
I've changed my thermostat...
Also, could a loose belt cause my water pump not to turn fast enough??? need some help here guys...only reason i think that about the belt is because it never starts heating up till it is still or idleing...i know it will heat up some while idleing, but it is like 160 while i'm driving, then it goes up to like 220+ while idleing...

When was the last time you changed the radiator? Do you have electric fans? My friends 86 IROC did the same thing and he found out it was the fan motor that was dead.

future mods:
completely done over suspension, black paint with flames, Hurst shifter, dakota digital gauge package, procharger supercharger.

i have an electric fan....and the radiator is the one that came with it in 89

You're not running straight antifreeze are you?
That could cause high temps. Water is actually a better coolant. A 50/50 mix works well...

Is the guage accurate? Is the fan running when you overheat? The fan doesn't kick on until past 200(not sure exactly), so the guage might just be a little bit off.

my fan runs all the time...it's on a toggle switch....and it is running...i may try mixing water into my coolant, since i am running straight antifreeze

Straight antifreeze will reduce the cooling abilities of your system... Straight water cools best, but it's not very good at not freezing/boiling, and it doesn't protect your system from corrosion.

so what's a good way to drain some antifreeze?

loosen the bottom radiator hose a little bit. drain about half the coolant and add some water. invest in a cheap coolant tester, it measures the specific gravity and will give you an accurate reading of the coolant dilution, and freezing point.

Before you do that...
There's a drainplug on the bottom of the radiator. It's on the passenger's side, on the bottom of the radiator.. get a nice and wide pan to catch the antifreeze when you drain it.. There's a lip that the antifreeze will drain onto... First it'll come down in one stream but after a while it'll roll down the lip and come out a few more places. Just something to be careful of.

yeah they were really thinking when they put that petco(k in there werent they. i dont use it myself, by loosening the lower hose at the water pump you can catch all the coolant instead of it running out from 3 places at once.

OOOHHHH Vader....I'm tellin.... he said a bad word! Do you say words like "Pet" and "chicken" in front of your children or at church?!?
BTW- If you have a pet dog (oops, I said it!) or small children, then keep them away from the puddle of antifreeze... unless it is your wife's little yappy dog that you want to off or something!

How high of a stall convertor do you have? I went from a 2000 to a 2800 to 3200 stall and my tranny temperature now runs about 15 - 20 degrees hotter. Tranny oil hotter = more load on cooling system = higher temps.
My car's temps run about what yours does now (a little bit lower) and in the same manner(hiway about 160, idling it jumps to over 200-but I usually turn on the fans before that happens). I'm thinking it's time for me to upgrade my cooling system to cope with modded drivetrain.

If you have AC check imbetween the radiator and the AC condensor. A LOT of times grass clippings and crap gets stuck in there. Also replace your thermostat with a 180 unit from stewartcomponents and do the 50/50 mixture. If you do all that and still have cooling problems check that your fan is working. My fan was crawling really slow and it eventually stopped working in the summer so make sure it's really blowing good and not just spinning. With all that checked and working you shouldn't have ANY cooling problems even with a hot tranny. A really good idea would be to flush out the radiator with water. The best way to do that is disconnect the lower radiator hose and take off the cap, try to seal the hose in the cap with your hand and let it run a while until you see the water coming out clear. A slight brown is normal, rusty that's all. Hope this helps.
