Question about rocker arms

this ha sprobably been poasted before but i cannot find the answeres i am looking for.

i have a 88LB9 with a ported plenum. i am taking the entire intake off the car to fix the manifold gasket, while th ebaseplate is off i have inmund to match it to the heads at least. now, i donot wish to change the cam but do wish for a little more from this dowel rod with a few peanuts glued to it.

would the comp cams 1.6 magnum roller tip rockers be worth it? prolly cost around 200 bucks or so. should they be a bolton? or am i going to have to replace the valve springs and clearence the heads? what would the lift at the valves be with these.(i dont know specs on the cam or i would figure it out)

also do yo uhave ot set the valve lash on hydrolic roller lifters? or just tourque them down (i believe thats whats on the car stock in 88) if so how do you do this?

thanks

i think the gain would be small and not offset the cost. i'd save my money for a cam swap and not rockers. on the other hand you'll find the "every little bit helps" idea and going to 1.6 rockers will give you more lift ,like .025 more @ .500

well i would like to chenge the cam but i am in NJ where they have adopted carb emmisions and i dont want to pic a cam and have it fail because of the cam. now a little more lift should only help prefromance not hurt me passing emmisions. if it makes the car pull harder to 4.7 k or so it will be ok.

now will it help like 10-15HP maby??

You'll prolly need new springs and the pushrod bores will need to be elongated..

SLP makes emmisions legal performance cams designed especially for our cars. good investment if you have to pass a sniffer test. you MIGHT get 10 HP out of a set of 1.6 rockers, considering your stamped rockers arent even the 1.5 they claim. stock rockers are probably around 1.45 with a big variance between them. only setback is your valve covers arent tall enough, and you could have clearance problems there. another detail that i wish i knew the answer to is weather the centerbolt valve covers will fit between the rockers, the aluminum rollers are quite a bit wider than stamped rockers. hope i could help.

You might consider using roller-tipped rockers instead of the fully rollerized rockers. They are about half the price, and won't make you feel as cheated when you realize how little gain you are getting for your expenditures. You'll get about a 6% increase in lifts at the valves, and an effective duration increase of about 2-3%. This will make very little difference in performance on an otherwise stock engine.

As Ed stated, for the same money in hardware, you can get a lot more for your cash with a cam swap. If you are avoiding that, the rockers are a step, but you might not need the Pro-Mags on a stock cam with stock springs.

You probably can use your existing springs with the increased ratio on a stock cam, too.

thanks guys, i had the roller tip rockers in mind. 190 from summit. only ones that make roller tips for self aligning arms.

so everyone is saying gain is minimal?
and not worth the time/money? i am trying to avoid a cam swap its a daily driver

anyway thanks for the impuet and more is welcomed

I've heard of bad things about the roller tips only. My friend wrecked his cam in his 327 when we think the tip floated off the valve. I've heard of this happening before. If I were you I'd do a cam swap.
