Numbers on motor.
I bought this 87 Z28 not long ago, It has a 5.0 H.O 4 Barrel motor. They didnt have them in 87. So I was wondering from where it would of camed from. Because I want to buy new headers and carburator and dont know if it will fit. Where could I find serial numbers or something??

10 to 1 its actually an LG4 engine (regular 305 4bbl) that had the HO air cleaner and scoops added.
For headers, get something for a L98 (5.7 TPI) engine... those will be the best ones.

LG4?? That sucks! I was sure it was a H.O. cause it works really good. I would buy a 350 if it wasnt for the high gas prices in Canada!
Thanks for the advices dude. I want to buy Hookers long tubes, hope they fit.

Get the 8th character of the VIN. Most likely it is "H".
Long tubes won't work well with a cat. But, if you don't mind no cat and reduced ground clearance, the long tubes are a nice over-kill.

Yeah the 8th digit is a H. I still dont think its the original motor do. I dont have a cat so it should sound great.
If I buy a new exhaust like the SLP Loudmouth will it mostly have a cat on it??

Look on the block... up front, just below where your passenger side head bolts on, behind where your altenator bolts on... you should see a small flat piece sticking off the block... on that piece there should a partial VIN number of the car the engine originally was in as well as a Design number.... thanks to Vader for showing me all that....
this is what you will be looking for... you may need to clean it good and possibly give it a bit of light sanding but eventually a number will appear...
When I looked at mine this is what I saw
V0210SNA (plus the last 9 digits of my VIN, this was important to me because I wanted to make sure the engine was the original engine when the car was made)
This translates to:
V = Flint, Michigan engine plant
02 = February
10 = 10th day of the month
SNA - 1987, 350 CID, RPO = L98, Automatic Transmission, VIN Code = 8, 225 HP, TPI fuel system, Firebird
You can look up the codes here...

Again... all props to Vader for showing me all of this
... just passing on the knowledge to a fellow 3rd Genner

If the block has a "DDY" stamping as part of the code on the spot 87ROCZ pointed out then it really is an HO motor that was swapped in. If not, then not likely, unless it was built/rebuilt to HO specs.
