i'll take a shot in the foot and speak up then, even though i'm probably wrong. If the teeth count are the same then yeah, probably. You can take a look at a LS1 and 3rd Gen starter just back to back if you go to NAPA and ask them to see both because you want a starter.

Why would you want a LS1 starter? Weight reduction? Getting it for free? If weight reduction, there's "mini" starters that probably weigh less than a LS1 starter and are less prone to heat soak.

that sounds like heat soak to me? LOL. Please do explain how there's no such thing as heat soak though, I'm always eager to learn new things.

well, LS1 starters do not work. But LT1 starters are much smaller and you should not have a problem with installing them, a direct fit-in apparently.

Put a heat sheild around your starter instead of buying a new starter, this should solve your heat soak problems.

Get an LT1 starter. Ignore most all parts from an LSx engine when thinking about upgrades for your Gen. I SBC.

As far as heat soak is concerned, you are both correct. However, for arguments sake, there is such a thing. Although, the name "heat soak" is really not the best name.

There are 3 cases to be made in the issue of heat soak. Some may argue the first while others argue the second. Either way, it all ends up at the third.

All the starter motor is a large electric motor, made of of copper winding and such. When this heats up (soaks in heat emitted by the exhaust), these internal parts swell and loose their efficiency. That's the soaking on the starters behalf.

However, heat soak also happens inside the engine. When the engine is still hot, the cylinder pressure is still relativly high. The air/fuel mixture also more easily fires. Thanks to the direct drive setup of your delco starter, it lacks enough torque to spin the engine faster than what it itself is willing to spin. This literally dead locks the engine and causes the no-start condition.

So, there is heat soak and there isn't. For the most part, heat soak should really be called "Weak starter can't turn hot engine, so I need a new starter."

I have a CVR mini starter. Haven't "heat soaked" yet.

i have a solenoid sheild (metal) on the solenoid itself, and the WHOLE starter is wrapped in a blanket, same crap, i'll get an LT1 starter.
